Air Transportation Apprentice

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Upon completion of initial skills training will complete OJT training to enhance skills and knowledge to progress to next level in Air Transportation Specialist career field.
  • Performs and manages air transportation activities.
  • Processes eligible air cargo, passengers, and mail.
  • Transports cargo to and from airfields as well as performs delivery of cargo to end user.
  • Operates (to include daily maintenance checks) automated or manual materials handling and other loading equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15,000 lbs. capacities), cargo loading sleds, Delta III transports,  passenger vans and pick-up trucks.
  • Follows procedures for loading passenger and cargo aboard aircraft, preparing cargo records.
  • Follows necessary safety and security precautions for handling and storing dangerous materials, special cargoes, mail, and baggage.
  • Becomes familiar with proper loading and compatibility of hazardous material according to military regulations.
  • Uses material handling equipment for cargo loading and unloading operations.
  • Ensures all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling and marking requirements have been met.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas.
  • Checks cargo against manifest, and annotates overage, shortage, or damage.
  • Secures cargo with appropriate devices and equipment adhering to current USAF regulations.
  • Expedites cargo movement as necessary.
  • Diligently conducts quality assurance practices throughout the cargo movement and pallet building process; reporting all incurred damage to cargo and equipment immediately to shift supervisor for further documentation.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.  
  • Attends daily safety meetings.
  • Uses Shipping Numbers and barcode data during cargo movement tracking.
  • Receives, identifies and distributes cargo to appropriate agencies in a proficient manner without compromising condition of cargo.
  • Maintains and performs required preventative maintenance and inventory of Tie-Down Equipment.
  • Identifies, prepares and labels damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment to CONUS or Christchurch, New Zealand.
  • Maintains and organizes cargo area creating an efficient and safe work environment.
  • Work outdoors, often in inclement weather conditions in 12-hour shifts.  
  • Work weekends and extra hours as required.   Work continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Frequently perform strenuous physical work.
  • Occasionally needs to lift and push 75lbs.
  • Frequently needs to lift and push 50lbs.
  • Constantly moves 20 lb. objects.
  • Frequently climbs vertical ladders and platforms into and out of equipment and to access cargo.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of passenger and cargo movement functions to include transport aircraft types, capabilities, and configurations; weight and balance factors; airlift transportation directives and documentation; cargo securing techniques; operation of material handling and other types of loading equipment or devices is preferred.
  • Some experience in automated or manual materials handling and other loading equipment, aircraft cargo/freight operations, warehouse experience, or a combination of all is required.
  • Valid US Driver’s License required (Class "A" preferred)
  • Must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts outdoors in inclement weather conditions including weekends and extra hours as required.   Work continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
