Air Transportation Specialist II

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Performs and manages air transportation activities. Plans, schedules, and processes eligible air cargo, passengers, and mail. Loads and unloads aircraft. Prepares and maintains air movement records and reports. Transports cargo to and from airfields as well as performs delivery of cargo to end user.
  • Team leader for a cargo crew consisting of four personnel. Performs and manages air transportation activities. Plans, schedules, and processes eligible air cargo, passengers, and mail. Loads and unloads aircraft. Prepares and maintains air movement records and reports. Transports cargo to and from airfields as well as performs delivery of cargo to end user.
  • Supervises cargo team in functions such as loading and unloading aircraft, pallet build-up and receipt, operating automated and manual materials handling equipment; and processing, scheduling, maintaining records on passenger and cargo movement by airlift. Completes post season evaluations for team members as well as mentoring throughout the season.
  • Coordinates with ATO Airfield Supervisor, MCC Shift Supervisor, and Load Planner on all cargo staging or transportation needs and submits documentation for cargo received, delivered and inventoried.
  • Supervises and trains cargo team and provides individual training as necessary.
  • Interacts with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person.
  • Supervises the receipt, identification and distribution of cargo to appropriate agencies proficiently without incurring cargo misplacement or damage. Supervises the organization and maintenance of cargo area creating an efficient and safe work environment.
  • Operates, and conducts daily maintenance checks of, automated or manual materials handling and other loading equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15,000 lbs. capacities), cargo loading sleds, Delta III transports, passenger vans and pick-up trucks.
  • Maintains procedures for loading passenger and cargo aboard aircraft and for preparing cargo records.
  • Follows necessary safety and security precautions for handling and storing dangerous materials, special cargoes, mail, and baggage.   Manages proper loading and compatibility of hazardous material according to military regulations.
  • Ensures all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling and marking requirements have been met.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas.
  • Checks cargo against manifest, and annotates overage, shortage, or damage.
  • Secures cargo with appropriate devices and equipment adhering to current USAF regulations.
  • Expedites cargo movement as necessary.
  • Conducts quality control checks throughout the cargo movement and pallet building process; reports all incurred damage to cargo and equipment immediately to shift supervisor for further documentation.
  • Maintains a safe workplace and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.   Conducts daily safety meetings and provides attendance and subject documentation.
  • Uses Shipping Numbers and barcode data during cargo movement tracking.
  • Maintains and performs required preventative maintenance and inventory of Tie-Down Equipment.
  • Identifies, prepares and labels damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment to CONUS or Christchurch, New Zealand.
  • Works 12-hour rotating shifts outdoors in inclement weather conditions including weekends and extra hours as required.   Works continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Frequently perform strenuous physical work.
  • Occasionally needs to lift and push 75lbs.
  • Frequently needs to lift and push 50lbs.
  • Constantly moves 20 lb. objects.
  • Frequently climbs vertical ladders and platforms into and out of equipment and to access cargo.
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Valid Driver's license required. Class “A” is preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience is required in passenger and cargo movement functions, transport aircraft types, capabilities, and configurations; weight and balance factors; airlift transportation directives and documentation; cargo securing techniques; operation of material handling and other types of loading equipment or devices; customer relations principals; must be able to interpret and follow aircraft load plans.
  • Two years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.
  • Must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts outdoors in inclement weather conditions including weekends and extra hours as required.   Must be willing to work continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 75lbs.
  • Must be able to climb vertical ladders and platforms to access equipment and cargo.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
