Air Transportation Specialist III

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Maintains a safe workplace and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.   
  • Conducts daily safety meetings and provides attendance and subject documentation.
  • Maintains productive and respectful relations with all aircrews and personnel at all times.
  • Provides information on schedules, routes, air movement requirements, baggage limitations, and local facilities for passengers.
  • Supervises and executes procedures for handling sensitive or high profile cargo/passengers, i.e.; medical evacuations and distinguished visitors.
  • Performs and manages air transportation activities.   
  • Plans, schedules, and processes eligible air cargo, passengers, and mail.  
  • Prepares and maintains air movement records and reports, ensures all documentation and packaging requirements have been met.  
  • Coordinates cargo operations at South Pole Airfield, including safe loading and off-loading of all aircraft.
  • Ensures all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling and marking requirements, and all border clearance requirements have been met.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas.
  • Checks cargo against manifests, and annotates overage, shortage, or damage.
  • Follows necessary safety and security precautions for handling and storing dangerous materials, special cargo, mail, and baggage.  
  • Supervises functions such as loading and unloading aircraft, operating automated and manual materials handling equipment.
  • Conducts quality control of practices throughout the cargo movement and pallet building process; reports all incurred damage to cargo and equipment immediately to Logistics Supervisor for further documentation.
  • Provides departmental training and completes safety/accident reports.
  • Operates, and conducts daily maintenance checks of, automated or manual materials handling and other loading equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15,000 lb. capacities), cargo loading sleds, Pisten Bullys, and snowmobiles.
  • Maintains and performs required preventative maintenance and inventory of Tie-Down Equipment.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas.
  • Keeps airfield cargo inventories current reflecting all pallets, loose cargo, and passenger survival equipment.
  • Coordinates the building of all oversized material onto married pallets, using the current priority list, and oversees that proper restraint is used, and Center of Balance is calculated/marked correctly. 
  • Identifies, prepares and labels damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment.
  • Frequently performs strenuous physical work - constantly moves 20 lb. objects; frequently lifts/pushes 50 lb. objects, occasionally lifts/pushes 75 lb. objects with assistance of a co-worker.
  • Frequently climbs vertical ladders and platforms into and out of equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Valid Driver's license required. Class “A” is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience is required in freight movement including documenting, expediting, tracking, and hazardous material transportation.  
  • Six months airfield operations experience is required.  
  • Must be knowledgeable of passengers and cargo movement functions to include transport aircraft types, capabilities, and configurations; weight and balance factors; airlift transportation directives and documentation; cargo securing techniques; border clearance requirements; operation of material handling and other types of loading equipment or devices, fleet service functions; automated data processing equipment and its application in airlift activities; passenger service functions, and customer relations principles; interpreting and following aircraft load plans.
  • Understands proper loading and compatibility of hazardous material according to USAF regulations.
  • One year of supervisory or leadership experience is required.  
  • Familiarity with automated cargo tracking programs such as MAXIMO, ICODES, and Microsoft Office 2000 software within the Microsoft Windows Operating System is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of US Air Force loading regulations (dash 9) is preferred.  
  • Previous experience with remote polar logistics operations is preferred.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours in an extreme environment while following all safety guidelines.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical and dental examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community chores commonly referred to as “house mousing” and “daisy picking.”
  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
