Air Transportation Specialist III

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Performs and manages air transportation activities. Plans, schedules, and processes eligible air cargo, passengers, and mail.   Loads and unloads aircraft. Prepares and maintains air movement records and reports. Coordinates all cargo operations at the various airfields operated by the USAP. Coordinates the safe loading and off-loading of all aircraft. Maintains productive relations with all aircrews and Air National Guard (ANG) personnel at all times. QC’s all cargo loads in preparation of aircraft loading.
  • Verifies eligibility of cargo and mail offered for airlift. Reviews passenger travel authorizations for validity and accuracy. Ensures all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling and marking requirements, and all border clearance requirements have been met. Provides information on schedules, routes, air movement requirements, baggage limitations, and local facilities for passengers.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas. Checks cargo against manifests, and annotates overage, shortage, or damage. Secures cargo with appropriate devices and equipment.
  • Follows necessary safety and security precautions for handling and storing dangerous materials, special cargo, mail, and baggage.   Understands proper loading and compatibility of hazardous material according to military regulations.  
  • Expedites cargo movement as necessary.  
  • Supervises functions such as loading and unloading aircraft, operating automated and manual materials handling equipment.
  • Supervises processing and scheduling, and maintains records on passenger and cargo movement by airlift.
  • Conducts quality control of practices throughout the cargo movement and pallet building process; reports all incurred damage to cargo and equipment immediately to shift supervisor for further documentation.
  • Trains cargo teams and provides individual training as necessary.
  • Operates, and conducts daily maintenance checks of, automated or manual materials handling and other loading equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15,000 lbs. capacities), cargo loading sleds, Delta III transports, passenger vans and pick-up trucks.
  • Maintains procedures for loading passenger and cargo aboard aircraft, and for preparing cargo records.
  • Ensures all cargo documentation, packaging, labeling and marking requirements have been met.
  • Selects, assembles, palletizes, and transports aircraft cargo loads to and from aircraft and storage areas.

  • Secures cargo with appropriate devices and equipment adhering to current USAF regulations.
  • Maintains a safe workplace and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.   Conducts daily safety meetings and provides attendance and subject documentation.
  • Uses Shipping Numbers and barcode data during cargo movement tracking.Maintains and performs required preventative maintenance and inventory of Tie-Down Equipment.
  • Identifies, prepares and labels damaged aircraft pallets and tie-down equipment for shipment to CONUS or Christchurch, New Zealand.
  • Work outdoors, often in inclement weather conditions in 12-hour shifts.  
  • Work weekends and extra hours as required.   Work continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Frequently perform strenuous physical work.
  • Occasionally needs to lift and push 75lbs.
  • Frequently needs to lift and push 50lbs.
  • Constantly moves 20 lb. objects.
  • Frequently climbs vertical ladders and platforms into and out of equipment and to access cargo.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Valid Driver's license required. Class “A” is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience is required in freight movement including documenting, expediting, tracking, and hazardous material transportation.  
  • Airfield operations experience is required.  
  • Must be knowledgeable of passengers and cargo movement functions to include transport aircraft types, capabilities, and configurations; weight and balance factors; airlift transportation directives and documentation; cargo securing techniques; border clearance requirements; operation of material handling and other types of loading equipment or devices, fleet service functions; automated data processing equipment and its application in airlift activities; passenger service functions, and customer relations principles; interpreting and following aircraft load plans.
  • One year of supervisory or leadership experience is required.  
  • Familiarity with automated cargo tracking programs such as MAXIMO, ICODES, and Microsoft Office 2000 software within the Microsoft Windows Operating System is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of US Air Force loading regulations (dash 9) is preferred.  
  • Previous experience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.
  • Must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts outdoors in inclement weather conditions including weekends and extra hours as required.   Work continual shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 75lbs.
  • Must be able to climb vertical ladders and platforms to access equipment and cargo.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
  • Must be able to work legally in the United States without sponsorship.
