Reports to: Carpentry Supervisor / Maintenance Supervisor or Facility Management Personnel

Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on projects at other locations in Afghanistan.   Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.

Working Environment:  The candidate will work in a traditional office setting as well as construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with traveling to and working on such sites.

Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum.  The candidate participates in a duty phone rotation and must be willing to quickly respond to emergencies and contingencies as they occur to ensure the continued 24/7 operations of the facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs full journeyman craftsman level maintenance, repair and construction work as Carpenter in US Embassy properties to include Camp Alvarado.
  • Receives oral instruction or work orders concerning work to be done, and proceeds to accomplish the necessary maintenance, repair or installation of equipment / structures in accordance with established trade practices and methods.
  • Drive an official vehicle to transport tools, equipment and materials needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Receives work orders indicating the location and scope of work to be acomplished.
  • Independently determines the problem and takes corrective action.
  • Sets up and operates machines, including power saws, jointers, mortises, tenons, molders and shapers, to cut and shape Woodstock.
  • Mark dimensions of parts on paper or lumber stock, following blueprints and matches color, grain, and texture.
  • Install hardware such as hinges, catches, drawer pulls, using hand tools.
  • Sands and scrapes surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing.
  • Bores holes for insertion of screws or dowel by hand or using boring machine.
  • Trims component parts of joints to ensure snug fit, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, wood files.
  • Glues, fits and clamps parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit.
  • Drives nails or other fasteners to joints of articles to prepare for finishing.
  • Installs prefabricated window and doors, insulation, wall, ceiling and floor panels or siding.
  • May do minor remodeling work associated with reconfiguration of office space, to include drywall and plastering.
  • Fabricates wooden boxes and shiping crates.
  • Assembles and repairs counter tops, cabinetry and wardrobes and bookcases.
  • Independently performs maintenance, repair and installation of work after job layout, work sequence, and material requirements have been discussed with supervisor.
  • May work with a journeyman mechanic in another trade on a large-scale job, performing simpler operations or assisting with highly skilled work.
  • Performs handyman tasks as needed and directed by the Carpentry Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor or Facility Management personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:

  • Must have 5 years as experience as journeyman in the construction trades.
  • Must have good customer-oriented service skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.


  • High school diploma or GED required.

Language Requirements:

  • Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Certification as Journeyman Carpenter is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license from Home of Record.


  • Already possess a US Government issued Secret clearance or be able to obtain one prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification or clearance level for the duration of the contract.
