Crane Operator


Independently operate all mobile cranes, to include friction cranes, and forklifts of 50,000 pounds capacity.  Operate tug/transporter combinations and tug/semi-trailer combinations.  Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification.  Perform work in other classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignment.

Performs duties in compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force laws and regulations and requirements and KSC/CCAFS energy management conservation regulations, collective bargaining agreements, security, safety, hurricane and other specialized programs or contractual requirements relating to the business of the section, working within the limits of established policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers, and suppliers.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Operate other heavy equipment such as crane carriers, Hi-Rangers, man lift platforms, hydraulic lifts, spider stagings, converter dollies, cargo lift trailers, and tractor/trailers.
  • Select, secure and adjust suitable chains, cables, slings, hooks and other lifting and securing devices to properly load/unload and balance a variety of equipment, and other items being moved or positioned by mobile cranes.
  • Safety check cranes, forklifts, Hi-Rangers, etc., before and after operations.
  • Check handling equipment for conformance to applicable documents and safety regulations.
  • Work with blueprints, schematics and documents.
  • Perform fabrication of wire, rope slings and sling assemblies.
  • Operate proof load test shop equipment to accomplish work assignment.
  • Operate ground support equipment, as required, to accomplish work assignment.
  • Determine and calculate crane capacities at any given radius.
  • Maintain logs and records, as required.

  • Must maintain security clearance, area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Performs other related and/or associated duties as required.

This classification may include managing hazardous materials or other environmental responsibilities.


  • Lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects exceeding 30 pounds
  • Walk, stand, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and bend/twist body for extended periods of time
  • Work at heights
    • Walk up/down stairs frequently
    • Climb ladders and scaffolding
  • Use hands to handle, control, feel objects, tools and make adjustments to equipment controls
  • Frequently perform repetitive movements
  • Ability to correctly perform with corrective devices, tasks that require close visual acuity, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus
  • Wear job/task related/required PPE:  i.e. safety shoes, hearing / eye protection, hard hat, respirators, gloves, fall protection etc.
  • Tolerate in and outdoor extreme cold, heat and humid conditions for extended periods of time
  • May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail.
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles and electrical shock hazards.
  • May be required to work a flexible work schedule and on alternating work days to meet mission and customer requirements.  


  • High school diploma or equivalent and
    • A recognized apprenticeship training program plus 2 years of experience OR
    • Military or Civilian vocational training plus 2 years of experience OR
    • 5 years of direct work-related skills, knowledge, and experience
  • Five years recent experience in the operation of multiple types of mobile cranes to include friction and hydraulic cranes.
  • Must possess a class A CDL with hazardous material endorsement. 
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain OSHA physical requirements and pass performance skills test. 
  • Must be capable of operating various types of cranes with capacities from 7 ½ ton to 250 tons, operate wreckers, aerial lifts, fork lifts, and aircraft ground moving equipment, as well as conducting pre-operational checks, and operational checks and post-operational checks. 
  • Must be capable of rigging various loads ranging from general cargo to multimillion dollar one of a kind flight hardware. 
  • Must be capable of handling emergency situations and take corrective actions as required. 
  • Must be able to coordinate the people and equipment necessary to perform a hazardous lifting operation as well as give direction to ground crews. 
  • Must be able to perform proof load testing of various equipment, rigging and hardware adapters. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain job related Licenses, Certifications etc. required by Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force standards, rules and regulations
  • Able to interact with customers and coworkers in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Must have working knowledge of computers and work-related computer programs associated with the position
