GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):
•    Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
•    Complies with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals.  Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
•    Under the direct supervision of the fire chief, responsible for the supervision and operation of all communications and computer management for the Antarctic Fire Department.  This includes the day to day operation of the fire department dispatch center, including but not limited to; all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, pagers both 9-1-1, and administrative phone lines,  VHF radios and fire alarm receiving system.  
•    Provides direct supervision of all subordinate communication coordinators (dispatchers).
•    Supervises and performs operator maintenance on all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines and pagers.
•    Coordinates, schedules, and monitors technical maintenance of all base station, portable and mobile radios, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines and pagers with appropriate technicians.
•    Supervises, schedules work and monitors the performance of subordinate dispatchers.
•    Submits software recommendations.
•    Provides support departmental personnel computer and communications requirements as tasked.
•    Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc) in accordance with management policy.
•    Responsible for communicating with and monitoring emergency service personnel.  (Fire Fighters, SAR, fire Technicians, Medical staff, Spill Response personnel, etc.)
•    Answers 9-1-1 and other phone lines taking both emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
•    Monitors King Fisher fire alarm monitoring system.  Dispatches appropriate personnel (Fire Department and/or Fire Technicians) when appropriate.  Also includes some systems that are monitored via phone connections as opposed to the King Fisher system.
•    Answers and routes off-continent phone calls for work related and emergency contact purposes.
•    Answers, delegates and tracks service requests for FEMC emergency work-orders.
•    Accurately and efficiently maintain various logs in a variety of formats.  (Firehouse software, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, Power Point programs, etc.)
•    Coordinates international communications and relays information to appropriate agencies.  Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
•    Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military, and other agency officials, both over the phone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
•    Coordinates radio communications as required during SAR or mass casualty events/drills.
•    Notifies communications technicians when equipment malfunctions or failures occur.
•    Maintains knowledge of, and tracks, all outdoor recreational travel, including contacting SAR and the SAR Response Team when guidelines dictate.  Provides communication support to personnel in the field.
•    Monitors vehicle travel away from station during winter and win-fly.  Initiates SAR procedures as required.
•    Works a varied schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage of the communications center.  This includes working weekends, nights and holidays.
•    Maintains a safe work center, adheres to Safety guidelines, and participates in weekly safety meetings.
•    Employees and contractors may, in the course of performing their official duties, have access to a wide variety of personal identifiable and sensitive information (PII/SI) electronically and in hard copy.  Personal and sensitive data including Social Security numbers, date and place of birth, demographic data, home addresses/telephone numbers/personal email addresses, passport numbers, bank account numbers, performance reviews, reviewer identity tied to performance reviews, unfunded proposals, proprietary parts of funded proposals, and other similar information should be protected according to Federal regulations and United States Antarctic Program policy, and only disclosed in accordance with the United States Antarctic program requirements.
•    Performs other duties as required.


•    High school diploma or equivalent required.  BS/BA preferred.
•    IFSAC, Pro-Board/DOD, or State Certified Telecommunicator I/II; Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications required for offer consideration (training offered online through FEMA).
•    Minimum five years diversified experience in emergency dispatch radio operations and communications technology is required.  
•    Computer experience required.  
•    At least two years previous supervisory experience preferred.
•    Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.  
•    Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
•    Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum. 
•    Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
•    Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
•    Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
