Electrician Apprentice

Supports the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) and the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Program. ASC Electrician Apprentice will perform maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Electrical Foreman. Tasking will be based on an individual’s experience and departmental labor needs.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all-inclusive):

  • Participates in safe workplace program, ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Accomplishes electrical work on maintenance and construction projects in Antarctica under Foreman & Electrician supervision.
  • Performs installation of branch circuits, power distribution wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, and conduit according to the National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Assists Electricians in troubleshooting and repair of existing electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Assists with scheduled Preventative Maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Advises Electrical Foreman and Electricians on job progress and material requirements.
  • Accomplishes tasking utilizing design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.
  • Completes accurate and thorough documentation of work performed and processes involved.
  • Works outside in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.
  • Adheres to ASC Electrical Safety Program and strives to promote electrical safety throughout the United States Antarctic Program.
  • Identifies unsafe conditions and/or NEC violations and reports them to the Electrician Foreman.
  • Works with other departments to plan and complete tasking.
  • Uses computer based labor, material and maintenance tracking applications.
  • May deploy to remote field camps for periods of days or weeks, sleeping in a tent in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • U.S. Vehicle Operators License required.
  • Minimum two years (4000 Hours) of documented experience as an Electrical Apprentice is required.
  • Must have completed or be participating in a formal Apprenticeship Program, or your jurisdictions equivalent.
  • Experience with rough wiring, power distribution wiring, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, and installation of conduit is required. 
  • Experience in construction and maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities is preferred.
  • The ability to read design drawings and wiring diagrams is preferred.
  • Experience with or certification on NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace is desired.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others and get along well with co-workers, grantees and other community members.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • US citizenship or US Permanent Resident Status is required.
