The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) Mission is to provide Naval Warfare Centers, the Fleet, and other customers with accurate undersea, surface, and in-air three-dimensional tracking data and other unique Atlantic test facilities.  In support of Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and Fleet readiness assessment and training. AUTEC is a Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport's largest single team project, providing both deep and shallow water test and training environments.

Responsible for operating and maintaining all vessel machinery. Performs troubleshooting and repair of engines and ship systems on the AUTEC Project.  Reports directly to the ship Chief Engineer or small boat Captain depending on assignment.


  • Operates all vessel machinery in day to day operations.
  • Performs required preventive maintenance and assists marine repair shops in any major overhauls.
  • Identify and troubleshoot all minor engineering problems. 
  • Ability to be trained for proper response to emergency situations (ex: man overboard, fire, flooding etc.)  Determine parts, supplies, and material requirements for job accomplishment. Insure all required engineering log entries are properly recorded in log book.
  • Insure sufficient amounts of fuel, lube oil, and fresh water are aboard for required voyage. Conducts rigging operations of heavy equipment per NAVFAC guidelines and standards.
  • Handles and transports hazardous ordnance materials up to class / division 1.1 per NAVORD standards.
  • Trained in recovery operations on exercise torpedoes (MK-46/MK-50 REXTORPS, MK-48, Mod 4, 5, 6 and MK-46, 54 EXTORPS)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a technical institute or trade school with a specialty in power mechanics preferred.
  • Five years related experience aboard diesel powered vessels may be substituted for the formal education requirement. 
  • USCG QMED or DDE preferred.
  • Must meet the requirements to obtain and maintain certification in Explosive Weapons Certification within 6 months. 
  • Must be familiar with high and medium speed diesel engines, and electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic power transmission, potable and cooling water, sewage treatment and fuel pumping systems, which are typically found aboard such vessels. 
  • Must meet physical examination requirements of BUMED Inst. 6270.7 series and OCD (RS) 22 05 1 for occupational exposure to OTTO Fuel II. 
  • Must be able to push, pull and lift 50 lbs.
  • Must pass standard pre-employment physical.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • This position requires the individual to be eligible to obtain a US Government security clearance; US Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
  • A valid US Passport and Driver’s License is required.
