Purpose and Scope:

Perform a variety of fire protection engineering assignments to support project requirements development, design, installation, operations and maintenance of facility systems that are located at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida.  The specific types of facilities in which these systems are located include space flight hardware processing facilities, launch pad support facilities, Engineering and Administrative Support buildings and other types of industrial facilities.  Projects range from simple single-discipline to complex multi-discipline.   

Essential Responsibilities:

Must have a solid foundation in basic engineering principles. 

Working with minimal supervision, responsible for developing the concept, basis of design and technical design solutions to maintain operability of assigned systems and components and developing plans, processes, procedures, functional and data requirements analysis, system analysis, and documentation preparation.

A specialist in specific discipline of Fire Protection Engineering on technical approaches to maintain operability of systems and components and apply cost effective repairs, upgrades or replacements.

Assignments range from requirements development thru design and implementation support. 

May assume a team lead role for the work group as well as train and guide other engineers.

Familiarity with applicable NFPA codes and other industry standards.

Design of new and modification of various types of existing water-based fire protection systems and special hazard systems and components such as clean agent fire extinguishing systems; dry chemical extinguishing systems; wet chemical extinguishing systems; carbon dioxide extinguishing systems; fixed aerosol fire-extinguishing systems; quad-valve deluge systems; water-based sprinkler systems; standpipe and hose systems; stationary fire pumps and controllers, riser and cross connection piping distribution piping; and other related systems and components.

The candidate must also have experience in developing design criteria; performing hydraulic calculations; sizing of piping; component placement; water supply and distribution; agent storage; personnel safety; inspection, testing and maintenance procedures and frequencies; detection, alarm and signaling systems; smoke control systems; explosion protection and prevention systems and egress and occupant movement.

Familiarity with Fire Protection Analysis such as hazard and risk analysis.

Familiarity of Fire Dynamics Fundamentals such as fire and smoke behavior, fire size and growth, combustion and heat transfer from fire and smoke.

Code Compliance Reviews.

Identifying long lead equipment.

Participate in commissioning services and mission readiness review.

Coordinate with and support other Design Engineers, Operations and Maintenance staff.

Conduct site visits and experimental investigations, analyze engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations. Maintains technical project responsibility for assigned tasks and advise management of progress.

Perform field inspections of fire suppression and mechanical systems and attend system start-up field activities.

Support the Configuration Management (CM) program to include the evaluation and monitoring of all modifications to configured systems and the generation of Engineering Change Requests to improve interoperability, reliability, and maintainability. Adhere to applicable CM standards.

Ensure that assigned projects are completed on time and within approved scope and budget.

Interface and coordinate with internal and external customers from project initiation and requirements development to design review and working group meetings in order to ensure compliance with project requirements.

Apply cost effective repairs, upgrades or replacements. Provides technical support to ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) estimates for projects, as well as risk assessments to support proper project prioritization.

Provide technical support to project task plan development and implementation.

Participate in System Health and Readiness Program (SHARP) team activities.

Support Shop technicians and operators as needed for assigned systems. Troubleshoot and provide technical expertise for technical anomalies as they arise.

Prepare, deliver and submit technical presentations in support of planning efforts.

Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.

Perform other position related duties as assigned.
