Fixed Wing Operations Supervisor

GENERAL DUTIES (not all-inclusive):

  • Contributes to defining USAP aviation logistical needs and forecasts the number of flight hours and fuel required for aviation operations.
  • Coordinates cargo and passengers for all KBA missions and LC-130 missions to a number of deep field camps.
  • Works with Supervisor and with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish flight priorities and allocation of flight hours.
  • Participates with the Supervisor in the creation of a daily flight schedule and a weekly flight plan.
  • Conducts daily briefing with flight crews and supervises implementation of flight schedule.
  • Coordinates with the Aviation Management Department, Department of Interior Office of Aviation Services to ensure subcontractor compliance with NSF and Federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable Safety, Environmental, Health, and Waste Management policies/procedures and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  • Maintains courteous and professional communication with pilots, field parties, field camps, implementers, and other stakeholders as required. This responsibility includes relaying all changes in support requirements to relevant agencies.
  • In the absence of the Supervisor, attends science and operations meetings as the subject matter expert in their respective aviation discipline for supported science groups. Insures planned support requirements have been met prior to Grantees’ arrival at McMurdo.
  • Coordinates the season start-up activities by working with McMurdo departments and agencies to prepare for arrival of fixed wing contractor crew and aircraft.
  • Interacts with National Science Foundation, their sub-contracting agencies, military personnel, and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Acts as a liaison with grantees, NSF, deep field camp supervisors, NYANG, 500 AEG, Kenn Borek Air, ENEA, ANZ, AAD, BAS, ALE and ASC work centers and any other required entities to determine USAP intra-continental aviation support requirements for cargo, passenger and fuel movement.
  • Determines the most efficient method to provide support to each of the entities listed above with available USAP aviation resources.  
  • Provides mobilization support to USAP aircrews, including coordinating wellness checks and in-transit support from USAP stations/camps and other national Antarctic programs.
  • Coordinates support for aircraft, passengers, and cargo from other national Antarctic programs coming to McMurdo Station via Fixed Wing aircraft.
  • Generates reports to track and coordinate all Intra-continental aviation missions, and cargo and passenger movements for USAP aviation resources.
  • Provides statistical information regarding Intra-continental flights including planned vs. actual missions, cargo movements, and causes for flight delays, aborts or cancellations.
  • Utilizes Google Earth and AFF to monitor aircraft movements.
  • Manages fuel cache inventory documentation.
  • Manages geographic coordinates documentation.
  • Manages Fixed Wing input and collaborates with ANG on RFI / Camp Status Reports
  • Works with Supervisor to provide training and direction to Aviation Operations Coordinator.
  • Participates in planning conferences and meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/BA required. Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Degree in a business or an air transportation related field is preferred.
  • Valid Driver license is required.
  • Four years’ experience in administrative or logistical support with at least two years’ experience in aviation logistical support or passenger and cargo movement to include documentation, expediting, and tracking is required.
  • Leadership experience required; dispatch experience (aviation, 911, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience with remote or USAP logistical support and/or Polar deep field experience is preferred.  
  • Recent experience with USAP, especially at McMurdo Station or deep field camps, is strongly preferred.
  • Load Planner training preferred.
  • Department of the Interior Inter-Agency Training (IAT) qualifications preferred.
  • Must be skilled in word processing, spreadsheets and data base software, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
