General Maintenance Technician

Reports to:  General Maintenance Supervisor

Performance Location:  The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on projects and other locations in Afghanistan.   Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time

Working Environment:  The candidate will work on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with traveling to and working on such sites

Work Schedule:  This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum, is on-call 24/7 and must be willing to quickly respond to all critical issues as required

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs building woodwork and equipment-bins, cribs, counters, benches, partitions, doors, floors, stairs, casings, trim, metal and welding work. Plans and lays out work from blueprints, drawings, models or verbal instructions.
  • Install drop ceiling systems and sheet rock.
  • Repair painting
  • Build metal stud walls.
  • Hang and finish sheetrock board.
  • Uses a variety of carpenter’s hand tools, portable power tools and standard measuring instruments.
  • Performs painting and sheet rock repair.
  • May be assigned a local workforce to support the growing demands of the camp.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:

  • The ideal candidate will have a high school or vocational diploma.
  • He/she will take initiative and ingenuity to analyze a situation and to make frequent technical decisions based on specifications and electrical codes. 
  • Previous overseas experience is desirable and experience working in a desert environment is a plus.


  • High school diploma or GED

Language Requirement: 

  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English including reading and using English language building diagrams and technical manuals. 
  • Must have proficient English oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.

Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Skilled trades certificate in one of the following desired: Carpentry.


  • Must have a USG issued MRPT clearance or the ability to obtain one
