Hazardous Waste Technician

The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) Mission is to provide Naval Warfare Centers, the Fleet, and other customers with accurate undersea, surface, and in-air three-dimensional tracking data and other unique Atlantic test facilities.  In support of Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and Fleet readiness assessment and training. AUTEC is a Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport's largest single team project, providing both deep and shallow water test and training environments.

Responsible for daily operations for picking up and receiving hazardous waste from satellite accumulation areas into properly segregated areas in the hazardous waste storage facility on the AUTEC project. 

 Responsibilities:     

  • Maintain and update a computer database of the hazardous waste storage facility inventory.
  • Collects representative samples of wastes for laboratory analysis.
  • Assists with hazardous waste shipments and corresponding paperwork.
  • Conducts and documents routine SAA inspections.
  • Ensures waste containers are properly labeled and packaged according to EPA regulations.
  • Operates and maintains an oil/water separator.
  • Manages collection and shipment of the “Green Rag” (washable shop towel) program.
  • Performs spill response and cleanup as necessary.
  • Assist at Hazardous Material Warehouse.
  • Perform on call duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates degree in Environmental Science or related field preferred. 
  • Certified training in hazardous material and hazardous waste handling required. 
  • Four (4) or more years handling hazardous material and waste and conducting SAA inspections required. 
  • Must be able to obtain a forklift operator’s license within 6 month of hire.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER Training required.
  • DOT training required. 
  • Proficient Computer Skills in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point, Adobe Acrobat and Outlook.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interface with all levels of personnel in a multi-cultural team-oriented environment.
  • Work well independently since a majority of the duties are performed in the field with little direct supervision.
  • Detail oriented for reporting responsibilities.
  • Must meet medical requirements to properly wear respirators, PPE, and perform minor HM spill response.
  • Must be able to walk/stand for extended periods and climb ladders, kneel and crouch for inspecting.
  • Must be able to operate forklifts, drum movers and other specialty equipment in support of HM operations.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds of equipment in support of HM operations.
  • Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
  • This position requires the individual to be eligible to obtain a US Government security clearance;   US Citizenship is required.
