Job Title: Large Passenger Vehicle Operator

Assigned Work Site: Antarctica, McMurdo Station 

Reports to: Supervisor, Vehicle Operations

Department: T&L

Employment Type: Seasonal Contract



GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

    • Maintains a safe, friendly, and timely shuttle and taxi service and operates large passenger vehicles.
    • Operates shuttle service vehicles on varying road surfaces in inclement weather conditions with consideration for passenger safety.  Vehicles include 10-15 passenger vans, Foremost Delta II with passenger compartment, , Foremost 56 passenger Terra Bus, and Kress/ Caterpillar 730 tractor-trailer with 59 passenger module.
    • Picks up and transports all passengers and flight crew members to and from the airfield ramp while obeying all airfield safety requirements as required.
    • Performs required mechanical and fluid checks of shuttle vehicles prior to and during operation.
    • Completes required shuttle and taxi logs.
    • Communicates via two-way radio in accordance with prescribed procedures.
    • Operates shuttle system vehicles on a rotating shift basis.
    • Provides Scott Base shuttle service as required.
    • Provides transportation for LDB personnel.
    • Provides morning and evening shift change for 109th AW personnel.
    • Provides on call taxi service.
    • Provides courier service.
    • Monitors flights and return landing times, passenger transportation needs, taxi service needs, and all other various tasking as a dispatcher; dispatches tasking accordingly.
    • Provides taxi service at the airfield for airfield personnel.
    • Performs bellhop pickup service upon request for both incoming and outgoing flights.
    • Conducts tours for the USAF C-17 crew members, NSF members, and other requested groups as required.
    • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
    • Actively participates in safety briefings and meetings.  Performs Job Hazards Assessments, Work Center Inspections, and other safety reports as required.
    • Provides vehicle training for light passenger vehicles for other departments as necessary.  Provides large passenger vehicle training internally as necessary.
    • Supports other departments as necessary.
    • Must be able to interact with all team members in a positive and productive manner.
    • Frequently performs strenuous physical work.
    • Frequently needs to lift and push 50 lbs.
    • Constantly moves 20 lb. objects.
    • Frequently climbs vertical ladders into and out of equipment.
    • Frequently works outdoors in below freezing temperatures.
    • Responsible for maintaining workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
    • Performs other duties as required.


    • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
    • Valid driver's license required. CDL with air brakes endorsement preferred.
    • A Minimum of 1 year vehicle and/or equipment operating experience with at least 6 months of operating large capacity passenger vehicles and/or tractor-trailer over-the-road vehicles is required. 
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
    • Customer service experience is required. Good multi-tasking and organizational skills and basic computer knowledge are required.
    • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.
    • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
    • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.
    • Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.
    • Must be legally able to work in the United States without sponsorship.
