Law Clerk - Claim Review

  • Performs initial review of claims for eligibility and non-economic loss compensation claims for legal sufficiency.
  • Analyze and organize documentation for supporting evidence; determining mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims .
  • Provide recommendations to Department of Justice Leadership about the appropriate disposition of claims, including the amount of loss that should be awarded.
  • Initiate proactive communication with claimants and claimants' attorneys to clarify issues relating to particular claims and to ensure that complete information is provided.
  • Follows guidance provided by the Department of Justice Leadership Office and claim review supervisors in processing claims. Maintains relevant claim information in the claims management database.
  • Other special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance.
  • Law degree, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
  • Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing claims, with the ability to apply established criteria to determine legal sufficiency.
  • Experience in analyzing and organizing documents for supporting evidence and determining mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims.
  • Strong Excel skills with experience using complex workbooks.  
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including experience working with the public (claimants) and with external attorneys (claimants’ legal representatives).
  • Requires excellent research and writing skills, demonstrated experience working with complex statutory and regulatory schemes, and flexibility and creativity in the application of existing policies.
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including Microsoft Suite, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Requires excellent and thorough knowledge of legal research tools.   
  • Requires ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
