Law Clerk I

PAE is seeking a Law Clerk to support the Environmental Crimes Section (ECS) with crucial litigation support to ECS attorneys in their mission of prosecuting environmental crimes and serve as a resource to prosecutors and victim-witness staff in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices prosecuting environmental crimes when ECS is not co-counsel.

The Law Clerk will be responsible for:

  • Assist ECS attorneys in identifying services under the Victims’ Rights and Restitution Act (VRRA), 34, U.S.C. § 20141, and to accord rights under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (CVRA), 18 U.S.C. § 3771.
  • Support the ECS attorneys and staff from United States Attorney Offices (USAO) by assisting attorneys in their responsibilities for compliance with the CVRA and VRRA throughout the investigation and prosecution process.
  • Work with an ECS attorney in preparing legal documents, including victim-witness statements; perform complex legal research for the trial staff regarding victim-witness issues; assist in preparation of pleadings regarding victim issues; and assisting attorneys with notification of victims and witnesses, and issues of restitution to victims.
  • Providing victim notification of court proceedings and case and victim status; providing assistance to attorneys regarding victims services; preparing and completing victim impact statements; executing all necessary information on the Victim Notification System (VNS) Data Management System.
  • Assist attorneys in providing Department and law enforcement training support on victim issues under the CVRA, for which the candidate will be trained.
  • Other similar duties may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.
  • Complete Law Degree (JD).
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a government litigation support environment.   
  • Sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. 
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Ability to travel with attorneys or for witness support when requested.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with clients in a litigation support role/environment such as a community legal aid clinic, USAO, public defender's office, 9/11 compensation fund.
