Legal Assistant

  • Compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents; summarizes depositions and other transcripts.
  • Maintains case files; performs simple legal research; indexes, tracks and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery) indexes, tracks and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial.
  • Prepares exhibit cross-references.
  • Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
  • Prepares a variety of substantive legal documents to include various motions, proposed orders, warrants, indictments, subpoenas, briefs and other legal actions to represent the interests of the United States in litigation. Legal documents are properly formatted and thoroughly proofread for punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Repetitive/routine legal documents are consistently prepared independently in accordance with established guidelines with fewer than three error during the contract period. These documents are drafted for review and approval of AUSA staff prior to issue.
  • Provides complete documents either on or before established suspense date. Upon approval, processes documents and performs necessary follow up. Document preparation may entail proficient us of data transcription machine.
  • Verifies citations and statutory references using original and online legal resources and ensures citations and references are complete and consistent with source material.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain a government security clearance.
  • One (1) year of office/administrative experience. Additional training will be provided to perform listed responsibilities.
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with electronic and paper file management.
  • Experience with debt collections and financial documents.
  • Ability to perform legal research using LEXIS and/or Westlaw.
