National Mission Unit (NMU) J2 Mentor-ASSF

Duty Description: As a National Mission Unit (NMU) J2 Intelligence Trainer/Advisor, TAAM NMU Intelligence Sections and provide advice/recommendations to NMU Commands. Must be proficient and knowledgeable in surveillance/reconnaissance, Counter Insurgency (COIN), operating multi-agency teams, Afghan Source Operations Management (ASOM), Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Sensitive and Tactical Site Exploitation (TSE), all source intelligence, Intelligence of the Battlefield (IPB), Target Package Development, Counter Crime, and Counter Intelligence. Familiarity and competence required regarding tactical to strategic levels of war, ongoing operations (intelligence drives operations) due to NMU reach, Fusion Center Cell operations, Warrant Based Targeting (WBT), SIGINT, GEOINT, IMINT, and HUMINT.

Serve as a member of a Special Operations Advisory Team (SOAT) working with a Coalition Force partner (NATO or Troop Contributing Nation (TCN). Be prepared to assist and augment other J2 Section Trainer/Advisors within a Province Special Unit (PSU) in order to support mission/TAAM requirements. Provide required reports and documentation to the GCPSU J7/LNO or ASSF-TP Program Management. Be prepared to augment the Tactical Site Exploitation (TSE) Mobile Training Team (MTT) as required.

Required Hours:
Work may include nights, holidays, and weekends on short notice. Standard will be to conduct training sixty hours per week while OCONUS.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Provide TAAM to NMU J2 Intelligence Sections; intelligence advice to the NMU Command.
  • Serve as a member of a SOAT working with a Coalition Force partner (NATO or TCN).
  • Proficient and knowledgeable in surveillance/reconnaissance, Counter Insurgency (COIN), operating multi-agency teams, Afghan Source Operations Management (ASOM), Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Sensitive and Tactical Site Exploitation (TSE), all source intelligence, Intelligence of the Battlefield (IPB), Target Package Development, Counter Crime, and Counter Intelligence.
  • Familiarity and competence required regarding tactical to strategic levels of war, ongoing operations (intelligence drives operations) due to NMU reach, Fusion Center Cell operations, Warrant Based Targeting (WBT), SIGINT, GEOINT, IMINT, and HUMINT.
  • Be prepared to assist and augment other J2 Section Advisor/Trainers within a Province Special Unit (PSU).
  • Provide required reports and documentation to the GCPSU J7/LNO or ASSF-TP Program Management.
  • Be prepared to augment the TSE MTT in providing training.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite.
  • Capable of building and maintaining positive relations and rapport with teammates, the client (US, NATO, and Troop Contributing Nation military forces), and Afghan counterparts.
  • Understanding of the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) and capable of relating MDMP to the Afghan cipher process.
  • Able to work and live in austere and hostile environments in Afghanistan, and understanding of the possibility to be further assigned to any location in Afghanistan, as allowed by the contract. 
  • Willing and able to travel outside of protected areas via military convoys or MILAIR, and wear protective clothing and equipment, as required.  Force protection will be provided by authorized sources.   
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing 
  • Must comply with all theater command policies, regulations, and General Orders.
  • Understand the ROE (Rules of Engagement).   
  • Additional duties, responsibilities, and requirements as identified by program management.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have two (2) years of experience in law enforcement/military surveillance and reconnaissance, Counter Insurgency (COIN) operations, and operating multi-agency teams.
  • Have one (1) year experience teaching/mentoring surveillance/reconnaissance in a COIN environment; at least one (1) year of combat/deployment experience.
  • Have successfully completed Combat Arms Military Education Level 3 (CPT’s Advanced Course) / Senior Leaders Course (formerly ANCOC) or senior Sergeant/Detective law-enforcement officer (LEO).
  • Have one (1) year experience working with Afghan police or military forces.
  • Have two (2) years of cultural and/or intelligence source management experience.
  • At least one (1) year of TAAM experience with a Partnered Nation Security Force.
  • Must be a US Citizen. 
  • Able to pass CENTCOM medical, dental and other CRC-related deployment requirements from CRC at Ft. Bliss, TX.    
  • Must continue to maintain CENTCOM Mod 13 and other deployment-related requirements for the Afghanistan theater of operations.     
  • Able to receive and maintain a current/active Afghanistan visa. 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance. 

    Desired Qualifications: 

  • If no prior military experience, possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and five (5) years of experience.
  • Previous experience working with coalition forces, NATO, or other Troop Contributing Nations.
  • Familiarization with the Afghan/MoI GCPSU structure/organization, mission, and cipher process.
  • Understanding of the NATO and Resolute Support structure and mission.
  • 10 years’ military and/or contracting experience in intelligence/combat arms. 
  • Experience on Military BN staff (or higher) and understand the MDMP concept.


Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Include but are not limited to the wear of body armor and helmet Personal Protective Gear, unassisted lifting and carrying of duffle bags not exceed the weight of 70 lbs. per piece, and the unassisted movement over uneven terrain.
  • Must be willing to work and live in Afghanistan with an understanding that there could be further assignments to any location in Afghanistan based upon the needs of the U.S. Government, to include hostile and austere areas.
  • Must be able to attend and pass USG deployment requirements at CONUS Replacement Center (CRC), Fort Bliss, Texas or equivalent location.
  • Must meet the medical requirements for the position being offered as determined by a pre-employment medical screening and in accordance with published CRC and USCENTCOM medical deployment standards.
  • Must be able to walk or stand on level and/or inclined surfaces up to eight (8) hours per day and sit for up to three (3) hours per day.
  • Must be able to routinely climb / descend stairs.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows / knees, and reach above / below shoulders.
  • Must be able to read and interpret newspaper and typewritten print.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • Employee will be required to work and live in a potentially hostile environment, at remote locations, and under austere conditions.
  • May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, under extreme weather conditions, within a hostile environment.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from aircraft, hostile fire, and other acts of aggression associated with this region.
  • Contractor personnel shall comply with all theater command policies, regulations, and General Orders. All tours are unaccompanied.
  • Refrain from using alcohol/illegal and non-prescription substances—abide by CENTCOM’s General Order #1.


Security Clearance: An active DoD Secret Security clearance is required in order to handle classified material and to work in a controlled area on a daily basis in support of the client.
