Reports to: AEK Plumbing Supervisor

Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on related DOS projects in Afghanistan. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.

Working Environment: The candidate will work on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with working on and traveling to such sites.

Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum. The candidate is on-call 24/7, participates in a duty phone rotation and must be willing to quickly respond to all critical issues.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a full range of plumbing services to the Embassy and all satellite sites under the direction of the AEK Plumbing Supervisor including installation and repair of plumbing and HVAC pipes, fittings, fixtures and drainage systems.
  • drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Weld carbon steel pipe. Test in a 6G position using 6010 welding rod for root pass and hot pass. Fill and cap with 7018 welding rod. Pass bend test. Provide testing certifications from previous jobs or testing facilities.
  • Studies building plans and working drawings to determine required work tools and equipment, and sequence of installation.
  • Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening the structure resulting from pipe installation. Locates and marks pipe and connection position and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using tape measure, spirit level, and plumb bob.
  • Uses hand and power tools to cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings. Uses a pipe cutter and pipe-threading machine to cut and thread pipes.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes made from metals or non-metals. Joins pipe using screws, bolts, flanges, fittings, solder or plastic solvent. Fills pipe systems with water or air and reads pressure gauges to ensure system is not leaking. Measure, cut and assemble PVC and copper tubing and fittings, including brazing, soldering and welding copper/copper, copper/brass, copper/steel, steel/steel, etc.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending leaking pipes, and opening clogged drains.
  • Maintains pool equipment including sand filters, pumps, accessory equipment, chemical feed pumps, tubing and control system.
  • Assembles, installs, maintains and repairs pipes, fittings, insulation, valves and associated items for HVAC hot and chilled water piping systems including welding as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:

The Plumber shall have the following experience for this position:

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years hands on plumbing experience in operations and maintenance services with a minimum of three years of experience in large facility physical plant and building operations.
  • Five years of experience as a journeyman plumber.
  • Working knowledge of the codes of the HVAC and plumbing trades.
  • Welding experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with staff from varied ethnic and geographic backgrounds.
  • Above average organizational and communication skills.
  • Previous overseas experience in an austere environment is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the plumbing trade and related safety precautions and considerable skill required for the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and equipment.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and summarize data and prepare daily reports and work orders.


  • • An AS degree in mechanical systems or related field from a two year college and/or equivalent field experience is preferred.
  • • High school diploma or GED required.

Language Requirement:

  • • Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.
  • • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • • Licensed Journeyman Plumber is required.
  • • Backflow Preventer certification is preferred
  • • Boiler Operator license is preferred.
  • • Welding certification is preferred.

Citizenship: US Citizenship is required for this position.

Clearance: Must have an active Secret security clearance.
