Power Plant Technician

Reports to: PAE Power Plant Supervisor   

Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the U.S. Embassy /outlying sites in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on related DOS projects in Afghanistan.   Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.

Working Environment:  The candidate will work in a traditional office setting as well as on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with such working on and traveling to such sites.

Work Schedule: This position works eight hours/day six days a week minimum. The Water/ Wastewater Treatment Supervisor is on call 24/7, participates in a Duty Phone rotation and must be able to quickly respond to critical after hours issues.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operating and maintaining Caterpillar, FG Wilson and other prime power and back up generators, to include troubleshooting and repairing power generation related system components. 
  • Changing filters, changing oil, changing coolant, adjusting fuel injectors, valve lashes and all other tasks given by the Lead Mechanic.
  • Operate and maintain fuel systems including but not limited to offloading and documenting fuel deliveries as well as maintenance of fuel related systems and storage facilities.
  • Assists with data collection and record keeping of various systems in operation according to prescribed schedules.
  • Interprets system operation readings and assists with making recommendations for needed corrective actions. Responsible for mechanical, electrical and PLC related operations & maintenance.
  • Work within a team with diverse socio-economic background, religion, nationality, ethnicity, language and cultures is essential.  Must be able to assist with the oversight and coordination of multiple workers with different tasks.
  • Assists Lead Mechanic with supervising staff and provides effective leadership, team building and consensus building skills with colleagues, supervisors and subordinates.
  • Assists with scheduling and direction of O & M work involving mechanical, electrical, electronic systems to support multidisciplinary engineering operations.
  • Assists with the preparation of purchase orders for equipment, parts and supplies as well as coordinating receipt and storage of material.
  • Ensures compliance of established policies and procedures, including environmental-health safety policies for a safe work environment.
  • Work within the safety guidelines and uses safe work practices as per and program company safety policies. 

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:


The Power Plant Technician shall have the following experience for this position:

  • Seven years’ experience with Caterpillar large bore engines including complete engine overhauls and mechanical and electrical diagnostics. This individual must be familiar with the tools and electrical measuring meters of the trade.
  • Seven years hands on experience operating and troubleshooting electrical and control systems for diesel power plants is required including hands on experience of simple electrical circuits, AC and DC theory and basic electrical formulas.
  • Mechanical and electrical background in power production/distribution.  Theoretical knowledge and functional/operational work experience of power generation, control room, various size generators (CAT 3512), (CAT 3516), alternators CAT 1MV, 24vDC to 15kVAC power generation-distribution grid,  GE and Siemens systems, PLC and electronic controls, switchgear, step-up and step-down transformers, substations, fusible switches, SCADA system and automatic transfer switches.
  • Minimum five years’ hands on experience in the operation & maintenance of switchgear controls, distribution switchgear, simple electrical circuits, AC and DC theory, PLC’s and ladder logic, basic electrical formulas, transformer functions, motor controls.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office software is required. 
  • Ability to work effectively with multi-cultural workforce.


  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years formal training in a mechanical trade, diesel engines, controls and electrical system related training certificates is required
  • Graduate of a power generation or diesel engine trade school preferred
  • Completion of an apprentice program with a Journeyman Certificate, or an AA/AS degree in power generation from a two year college, and/or equivalent field experience is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certificate Generator Mechanic and or Certified Electrician is preferred.

Language Requirements:

  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English including reading and using English language building diagrams and technical manuals. 
  • Must have proficient English oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.


  • Must have a USG issued MRPT or the ability to obtain one.
