Trades Helper

Position Title: Trades Helper

Reports to:   

Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on related DOS projects in Afghanistan. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.

Working Environment: The candidate will work on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with such sites.

Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum. The candidate is on-call 24/7 and must be willing to respond quickly to all critical electrical issues.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Comply with PAE policies and procedures, follow contract specifications, and follow instructions
  • Preform all work efficiently within established time frames for the purpose of providing a safe and workable environment and for preventing damage or liability exposure
  • Complete projects and work orders by coordinating with skilled tradesmen and supervisors
  • Perform a wide variety of general and semi-skilled maintenance activities
  • Assists journeymen mechanic or trades personnel in the performance of maintenance repair work associated with any of the Facility Maintenance trades.
  • Assists journeyman mechanics and trades personnel engaged in the performance of skilled trades and crafts work.
  • Uses hand and power tools to perform the lower skilled tasks of the trade assigned. Brings tools, supplies and materials as part of his/her assistance, to the job site, for the journeyman mechanic/ craftsman. Clean tools, equipment and work areas.
  • Drive an official vehicle to transport tools and materials to job site. Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Abides by all safety, health, and security rules and regulations.
  • Assists Engineer, Mechanic with replacing electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures , and motors; using plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings; repairing or replacing sinks, water coolers, and toilets; painting structures and equipment; repairing or replacing concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks; replacing damaged paneling and floor tiles; hanging doors and installing door locks; replacing broken window panes; and performing general maintenance on equipment and machinery
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed
  • Communicate effectively with staff, co-workers, and customers responding to their needs
  • Observe all security procedures and ensure other staff members also comply
  • Comply with rules for the site, security and safety guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:

The candidate will have the following experience and/or qualifications for this position:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience assisting trade workers including electricians, plumbers, carpenter, welders, painters, maintenance technicians in the performance of normal duties.
  • Thorough knowledge of hand tools, hardware and equipment.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described including related work experience in one or more of the building trades. 
  • Fully knowledgeable of all technical requirements as they apply.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical manuals and instructions.
  • Prior overseas experience in an austere OCONUS environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Education: 

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Mechanical or trade school certification, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid drivers’ license from Home of Record.

Language Requirement:

  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English including reading and using English language building diagrams and technical manuals. 
  • Must have proficient English oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.

Clearance: 

  • Already possess a US Government issued Secret clearance or be able to obtain one prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification or clearance level for the duration of the contract.
