Vehicle Mechanic

Performs vehicle maintenance activities on military and commercial design general purpose, construction and material handling vehicles and equipment. Activities include inspection, diagnostics, repair, and rebuild of components and assemblies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determines the overall mechanical condition of vehicles and equipment, corrections of deficiencies required, orders parts and effects repairs.
  • Systematically analyzes malfunctions by visual and auditory examination or through the use of test equipment.
  • Diagnose, repair, adjust, overhaul or replaces major assemblies or subassemblies such as power and drive trains, electrical, air-conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, pumping, suction and agitator, and hydraulic and traction systems.
  • Removes and disassembles gasoline or diesel engines and components.
  • Repairs components by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts.
  • Reassembles, adjusts, and tests repaired units for proper operation.
  • Calibrates and adjusts pumps, meters, safety unit proportioning devices, and limiting devices to ensure proper operation.
  • Synchronizes remote or manual electrical and hydraulic controls.
  • Adjusts power boosters, clutches, drive chains, and tension devices.
  • Performs hydrostatic hose testing of refueling vehicle and equipment.
  • Performs preventive and special maintenance, uses technical publications in maintaining vehicles to prescribed manufactures maintenance schedules.
  • Ensures special inspections and maintenance on vehicles are performed correctly such as, corrosion control, winterization, storage and shipment.
  • Properly annotates all maintenance performed on prescribed forms for data collection purposes.
  • Adheres to all established safety policies and standards to include identification, use, and proper procedures for handling or disposal of hazardous waste.

Education:

  • Completion of high school and technical school certification or advanced degree in diesel engines, electronics, and/or related field, with courses in shop mechanics or industrial arts is desirable.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in functions such as inspecting, repairing, or maintaining military and commercial design general purpose, construction and material handling vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge is mandatory of: mechanical theory applying to vehicles; using lubricants, methods of hoisting and handling heavy mechanisms; using tools; internal combustion engines; electricity and hydraulics.
  • ACTIVE DOD Secret Clearance with ability to maintain Secret Clearance.
  • US passport and driver's license.
  • Ability to successfully pass CENTCOM medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of deployment.
  • Country visa (as required in line with the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASE certified
  • Experience working on Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Freightliner, Volvo, International Caterpillar, Bobcat, JCB, Detroit Diesel, trucks construction equipment and vehicles.
  • Class A Drivers License
  • Experience operating heavy equipment
  • Formal schooling in technical industry (e.g., certification program, military training, technical/community college)
  • EPA certified in air conditioning

Working Conditions:

  • Work is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and long duty days/weeks.
  • Possible exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities.

Must be able to:

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time;
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts;
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools;
  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work;
  • Demonstrate the ability to hear and accurately interpret mechanical, technical and business information in an environment subject to noise, vibrations, etc.
  • Perform all work safely in a fast-paced work environment.
