Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on projects at other locations in Afghanistan.   Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time.

Working Environment:  The candidate will work in a traditional office setting as well as construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with traveling to and working on such sites.

Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum.  The candidate participates in a duty phone rotation and must be willing to quickly respond to emergencies and contingencies as they occur to ensure the continued 24/7 operations of the facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of homes, buildings and other relevant structures.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques to maximize efficiency.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Determine kind of materials and equipment needed to perform a task. Conduct tests and inspections of products, materials, services or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Performs full journeyman craftsman level maintenance, repair and fabrication work as a Welder in U.S Embassy and Camp Alvarado.
  • Receives oral instruction or work orders concerning work to be done, and proceeds to accomplish the necessary maintenance, repair, fabrication and/or installation of equipment, machinery or structure in accordance with established trade practices and methods.
  • Drive an official vehicle to transport tools, equipment and materials needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Receives work orders indicating the location and scope of work to be accomplished.
  • Independently determines the problem and takes corrective action. Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications to plan layout.
  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Determines required equipment and welding method, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry and welding techniques.
  • Lays out, positions and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straight edge, combination square, calipers and ruler.
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc or other welding equipment.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical or overhead position.
  • Cuts workpiece, using power saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
  • Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x- ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Monitors and reviews information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess Problems.
  • Independently performs maintenance, repair, fabrication and installation of work after job layout, work sequence, and material requirements have been discussed with supervisor.
  • Work with a journeyman mechanic/craftsman in another r trade on a large-scale job, performing simpler operations or assisting with highly skilled work.
  • Performs handyman tasks as needed and directed by the Supervisors.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment when appropriate to the task performed. Abides by all security, safety, and health rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:

  • Must have journeyman knowledge of machines and tools, including designs, repair and maintenance.
  • Must have 5 years as experience as journeyman in the construction trades.
  • Must have good customer-oriented service skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.


  • High school diploma or GED required.

Language Requirements:

  • Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management and the client.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Certified Pipe Welder , 6G 6010 Root & Hot Pass, 7018 Remainder is required.
  • Valid driver’s license from Home of Record.


  • Already possess a US Government issued Secret clearance or be able to obtain one prior to being hired is required for the position. Must maintain eligibility at the required certification or clearance level for the duration of the contract.
