Network Technician

The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) Mission is to provide Naval Warfare Centers, the Fleet, and other customers with accurate undersea, surface, and in-air three-dimensional tracking data and other unique Atlantic test facilities.  In support of Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and Fleet readiness assessment and training. AUTEC is a Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport's largest single team project, providing both deep and shallow water test and training environments.

The Cisco Network Technician’s role is to support the stable operation of the project-wide Cisco LAN/WAN networks. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing all Cisco network switches and routers, IOS software, and communication links while ensuring minimal network downtime. The person will also assist in the diagnosis, resolution, and documentation of Ethernet, Fiber, and wireless connectivity problems on the AUTEC project.


  • Collaborate with network engineers and designers to create optimal Cisco LAN/WAN design topologies and configurations.
  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot Cisco switches and routers, cabling, and IOS software.
  • Maintain and configure Cisco network devices, including routers, switches, and UPSs.
  • Monitor and test LAN performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
  • Practice Cisco network asset management, including maintenance of device inventory.
  • Prepare and ensure accuracy of network diagrams, procedures manuals, and templates for switch and router installations.
  • Respond to emergency network outages in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
  • This position does NOT include PC or server support.
  • Assist PC Systems helpdesk staff with connectivity issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • AA or AS degree is required.  Two (2) years of experience in related field may be substituted for each year of college. 
  • CompTIA Security + CE certifications.
  • Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification are required. CCNA preferred.
  • MS Windows 10 Certificate of training required, or must be obtained within first six months of employment.
  • Experience configuring and updating Cisco IOS required.
  • One to three years of experience in the field of Cisco LAN/WAN networking is desired.
  • Valid United States Passport and Driver’s License will be required.
  • Working knowledge of current TIA/EIA standards for fiber and copper cable.
  • Cabling installation knowledge and experience.
  • Working technical knowledge of Cisco IOS.
  • Working technical knowledge of network protocols, and standards.
  • Ability to operate network component analyzers, scanners, and testers.
  • Hands-on Cisco hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Ability to prioritize, schedule, and coordinate a variety of activities and projects.
  • Physical effort required to include cable installations and climbing ladders.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • This position requires the individual to be eligible to obtain a US Government security clearance;   US Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
  • A valid US Passport and Driver’s License is required.
