Senior Machinery Engineer

The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) Mission is to provide Naval Warfare Centers, the Fleet, and other customers with accurate undersea, surface, and in-air three-dimensional tracking data and other unique Atlantic test facilities.  In support of Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E), and Fleet readiness assessment and training. AUTEC is a Major Range and Test Facility Base (MRTFB) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport's largest single team project, providing both deep and shallow water test and training environments.

Acts as relief Chief Engineer aboard AUTEC vessels.  Responsible for ordering parts and services for the engineering department.  Responsible for all aspects of the engine oil sample program.  Maintains all maintenance records for all ships and boats.  Makes daily assignments of engineering crew personnel.  .  


  • Examines ship equipment such as pumps, ship generators, air compressors, circulators and condensers to locate malfunctions; Maintains oil sample program for the department.  
  • Provides supervision and assistance to vessel engineers as required.
  • Directs ship maintenance program, trains junior level diesel specialists in all facets of the above.
  • Responsible for engineering certification program for all shipboard personnel.
  • Responsible for day to day operations of the Marine Engineering department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  


  • BS degree in Engineering required.
  • Graduate of a state or federal maritime academy, or U. S. Naval or Coast Guard Academy, as an engineering officer.  
  • A total of 5 years of experience as a certified engineer aboard AUTEC vessels may be substituted for the formal education requirement.
  • Must be a certified Chief Engineer aboard AUTEC vessels.
  • Must hold a USCG DDE 4000 hp license, STCW, preferred.
  • Must be fully competent to diagnose and direct repair of problems with high and medium speed marine diesel engines and electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic power transmission, portable and cooling water, sewage treatment and fuel-pumping system.
  • Must possess basic understanding of structural steel and naval architecture. 
  • Must be familiar with scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance systems.
  • Must show professional ability to direct and motivate personnel assigned to the vessel as assistant engineers.  
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to carry out or direct maintenance tasks as required. 
  • Meet physical examination requirements of BUMED Inst. 6270.7 series and OCD (RS) 22 05 1 for occupational exposure to OTTO Fuel II. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • This position requires the individual to be eligible to obtain a US Government security    clearance; US Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to reside in remote location with limited medical facilities.
  • A valid US Passport and Driver’s License is required.
